1985年1月，國務院在全國人大會上提出建立教師節的議案，全國人大會通過了這一議案，確定每年的9月10日為教師節，1985年9月10日為新中國的第一個教師節。
1985年9月10日，全國的教師們迎來自己第一個教師節。18年前，新中國第一個教師節誕生了。從此以后，每年的教師節成為了人們生活中的一件大事，尊師重教成為了一種美德。
早在1932年，民國政府曾規定6月6日為教師節，解放后廢除了6月6日的教師節，改用“五一國際勞動節”為教師節，但教師節沒有單獨的活動，沒有特點。而將教師節定在9月10日是考慮到全國大、中、小學新學年開始，學校要有新的氣象。新生入學開始，即尊師重教，可以給“教師教好、學生學好”創造良好的氣氛。1985年9月10日，是中國恢復建立第一個教師節，從此以后，老師便有了自己的節日。

On April 19, 1951, Minister of Education and the Chinese Education Union Chairman of the National Committee issued a written statement that May 1 International Labor Day was at the same time celebrated as teachers' day. But this day lacks teachers' profession and the results were not ideal. Especially after 1957, under the influence of the “extreme left”, teachers were ignored, so teachers' day has actually ceased to exist.
