The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, usually in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance. This day's important activity is watching lanterns. Throughout the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism flourished in China. One emperor heard that Buddhist monks would watch sarira, or remains from the cremation of Buddha's body, and light lanterns to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, so he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on this day. Later, the Buddhist rite developed into a grand festival among common people and its influence expanded from the Central Plains to the whole of China.
每年農(nóng)歷的正月十五日，春節(jié)剛過，迎來的就是中國的傳統(tǒng)節(jié)日--元宵節(jié)。元宵主要的活動就是看燈。東漢明帝時期，明帝提倡佛教，聽說佛教有正月十五日僧人觀佛舍利，點(diǎn)燈敬佛的做法，就命令這一天夜晚在皇宮和寺廟里點(diǎn)燈敬佛，令士族庶民都掛燈。以后這種佛教禮儀節(jié)日逐漸形成民間盛大的節(jié)日。該節(jié)經(jīng)歷了由宮廷到民間，由中原到全國的發(fā)展過程。

The activity emerged during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social strata.

Tangyuan can be boiled, fried or steamed. It tastes sweet and delicious. What’s more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with "tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them to denote union, harmony and happiness for the family.
元宵節(jié)習(xí)俗
1、元宵節(jié)舞獅子：舞獅，又稱“獅子舞”、“獅燈”、“舞獅子”，多在年節(jié)和喜慶活動中表演。獅子在中國人心目中為瑞獸，象征著吉祥如意，從而在舞獅活動中寄托著民眾消災(zāi)除害、祈求生活越來越好的愿望。
2、元宵節(jié)吃“元宵”：正月十五吃元宵，是在中國由來己久的習(xí)俗，元宵即“湯圓”，它的做法成份風(fēng)味各異，但是吃元宵代表的意義卻相同。代表著團(tuán)團(tuán)圓圓和和美美，日子越過越紅火，生活越來越富裕。
3、元宵節(jié)猜燈謎：每逢元宵節(jié)，各個地方都打出燈謎，希望今年能喜氣洋洋的，平平安安的。因?yàn)橹i語能啟迪智慧又饒有興趣，所以流傳過程中深受社會各階層的歡迎，猜燈謎也是非常考驗(yàn)智商的一道游戲。
4、元宵節(jié)“送花燈”：“送花燈”簡稱為“送燈”，其實(shí)質(zhì)意義就是送孩兒燈。即在元宵節(jié)前，娘家送花燈給新嫁女兒家，或一般親友送給新婚不育之家，以求添丁吉兆，因?yàn)?ldquo;燈”與“丁”諧音。
5、元宵節(jié)祭門、祭戶：古代有“七祭”，這是其中的兩種。祭祀的方法是，把楊樹枝插在門戶上方，在盛有豆粥的碗里插上一雙筷子，或者直接將酒肉放在門前。
6、迎紫姑：紫姑也叫戚姑，北方多稱廁姑、坑三姑。古代民間習(xí)俗正月十五要迎廁神紫姑而祭，占卜蠶桑，并占眾事。
