Leaders from the preceding Sung Dynasty (A.D.960-1279) were unhappy at submitting to foreign rule, and set how to coordinate the rebellion without it being discovered. The leaders of the rebellion, knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, ordered the making of special cakes. Packed into each mooncake was a message with the outline of the attack. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully attacked and overthrew the government. What followed was the establishment of the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644). Today, moon cakes are eaten to commemorate this event.

中秋節各地習俗
江蘇：南京人中秋愛吃月餅外，必吃金陵名菜桂花鴨。桂花鴨于桂子飄香之時應市，肥而不膩，味美可口。酒后則必食桂花鴨和糖芋頭，澆以桂漿，美不待言。桂漿又叫糖桂花，中秋前后采摘，用糖及酸梅腌制而成。江南婦女手巧，把詩中的詠物變為桌上佳肴。南京人合家賞月稱“慶團圓”，團坐聚飲叫“圓月”，出游街市稱“走月”。在江蘇東臺一帶，每逢中秋節，則以藕橫斷為餅，包以碎肉，敷以小麥屑，入油鍋炸熟，謂之藕餅，俗稱“荷花”，寓意和睦團圓。
廣東：潮汕中秋美食品種頗多，主要分為三大類：一是糕餅類，即潮汕各地的月餅，甜的、咸的、葷的、什料的、多味的都有，種類繁多;還有面餅、軟糕、云片糕，均為中秋節糕餅，為潮汕人送親戚之佳品，潮汕人送月餅有睦親的含義。二是水果，中秋季節，潮汕一帶天高氣爽，正是水果成熟之時，柚、柿、楊桃、菠蘿、石榴、橄欖、香蕉等也是潮汕人中秋的另一類美食。三是農產的芋頭、南瓜，潮人用其制作的芋泥、瓜漿也是人們喜歡的，芋頭、糍粑等則是潮汕人中秋必吃的。
臺灣：高雄縣飼養水鴨的風氣很盛。中秋節前后正是公水鴨初長最嫩的時候，高雄美濃區的客家人往往于中秋節宰食公水鴨加菜，這已成為當地中秋的一個習俗。宜蘭地區在中秋節除了吃月餅外，還吃一種叫“菜餅”的食物。菜餅以面粉為材料，中間抹上黑糖烘焙而成。臺南地區則有在中秋節吃麻薯的習俗。
