I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way. Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting annoyed, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and more accurate when he stood up. Could he be more absorbed while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to lead to success. This child would have the willpower to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.

Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their ways.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

          24. Why did the author try to get his son seated time and again?

          A. To make him stay focused. B. To make him study hard.

          C. To make him keep calm. D. to make him behave well.

          25. The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to the author’s _______.

          A. idea B. discovery C. belief D. disappointment

          26. What can we learn from this passage?

          A. Parents have a great influence on their kids.

          B. Kids should be encouraged to study by themselves.

          C. We should have a better understanding of kids’ behaviors.

          D. It is not necessary for parents to worry about kids’ behaviors.

          27. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

          A. The study of kids’ behaviors B. A new attitude towards kids

          C. Kids’ success in their own styles D. The importance of being unique

          C

Celebrities are more in love with themselves than the average person, according to a new study.

In case anyone needed proof, a new study supports the widely held opinion: famous people are more narcissistic (自我陶醉的), which means they are more in love with themselves than the average person is. That is the conclusion drawn by Drew Pinsky and S. Mark Young of the University of Southern California, whose study of 200 celebrities will appear in the Journal of Research in Personality.

It is not the entertainment industry that turns stars into narcissists, the study found. Rather, it suggests, the selfadoring people seek jobs in show business. The study, whose subjects were all celebrities from Pinsky's “Loveline” radio show, found that reality TV stars were the most narcissistic of all celebrities. Female stars were also more likely than the male stars to exhibit narcissistic characteristics.

It's “common sense” that celebrities are narcissists, said Jeremy Ritzlin, a longtime Hollywood psychologist who has not seen the study. “Everyone knows famous people are really in love with themselves,” he said. “So it would be natural for narcissists to be attracted toward the stage and spotlight, where other people will also think highly of them.”

Pinsky, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry (精神病學(xué)) at USC's Keck School of Medicine, said narcissists desire attention, are overconfident, behave strangely and lack sympathy.” However, they are easilyliked, especially on first meeting, are outgoing and perform well in public,” added Pinsky, who has hosted the radio show “Loveline” for 20 years.

Celebrity guests appearing on the program were randomly chosen to participate in the study. Most of them took the Narcissistic Personality test.

          28. Who are more likely to be selfadoring in the study?

          A. The men TV stars. B. The women TV stars.

          C. The average people. D. It is not mentioned in the passage.

          29. What can we learn about the fact that celebrities are narcissists?

          A. It has been proved by Jeremy Ritzlin.

          B. It is already known to most of the people.

          C. It has been published in a research report.

          D. It means that celebrities don’t like others.

          30. Which of the following best describes the character of narcissists?

          A. Active. B. Selfish. C. Honest. D. Warm-hearted.

          31. Why narcissists like to enter the entertainment industry?

          A. They like to put on performances on stage. B. It’s much easier for them to find jobs there.

          C. They can be guests on the radio programs. D. They want to get well received by people.

          D

“How to Train Your Dragon” by British author Cressida Cowell is one of the best pieces of children’s literature. A child can make a whole alternative universe with a vivid imagination and Toothless, the hero’s hunting dragon, thus turning a rainy day into an adventure of a lifetime. However, if you have never read the book but instead choose to see the film version, you might think you were seeing a new-age war movie meant for adults rather than children.

Let’s look at “Where the Wild Things Are” for further discussion. The story centers around a lonely eight-year-old boy named Max, who sails away to an island. Creatures living there declare Max their king.

What an amazing piece of children’s literature! A treasure for every child’s library. Yet, children were crying in the movie theatre. Owls were falling from the sky, chicken’s arms were being torn off, and a child was running around a dark abandoned world fighting evil (惡魔) as the only human. It was almost as if Hollywood could not imagine children enjoying a movie for its basic literature content. Hollywood might be right. But more and more its audiences are complaining (抱怨) that there is an increased amount of violence in children’s stories today than in the past.

While there appears to be a trend in our society to make more violence more accessible to younger children, books and literature are generally an exception. I truly believe that children’s literature has become more vivid, and more colorful. This is a great treasure for the children, and is certainly not violent. What has changed the children’s stories of today is not the writers, but the film industry. In some way, children’s literature is just being strangely twisted. I wonder how much influence the author have over this.

          32. Which of the following can be found in the book of How to Train Your Dragon?

          A. Risks. B. Children’s teeth. C. New age. D. Owls.

          33. What did the author think of the film “Where the Wild Things Are”?

          A. Moving. B. Interesting. C. Frightening. D. Amazing.

          34. Which statement does the author agree to?

          A. Children should read books rather than see films.

          B. There is an increase in violence in children’s literature.

          C. The film version of children’s literature is disappointing.

          D. Authors should provide more excellent works for children.

          35. How does the passage mainly develop?

          A. By inferring. B. By giving explanations.

          C. By making comparisons. D. By providing examples.

If you are hungry, what do you do? Have your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? 36 But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What happens next?” “Why can’t I think?”

37 Why reading but not watching TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood. Since it develops other aspects of our life, we have to get help from reading.

Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain something to you.

38 Now this seed is unknowingly used by you to develop new ideas. If it is used many times, the same seed can give you great help to relate a lot of things which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams!

This is nothing but creativity. 39 Within no time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the right words.

So guys, do give food to your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. 40 Go and get a book!

          A. Now what are you waiting for?

          B. Reading can help you make more friends, too.

          C. Why not do some reading while you are hungry.

          D. Just like your stomach, your mind is also hungry.

          E. Also this makes a significant contribution to your vocabulary.

          F. Hunger of the mind can be actually solved through wide reading.

          G. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed.
