　　漢語中的“查字典”，說成英語通常是 look up sth in a dictionary 或 consult [refer to] a dictionary。如：

　　I refer to the dictionary frequently. 我經常查閱詞典。

　　You can look the word up in the dictionary. 你可以在詞典里查這個詞。

　　He often consulted a dictionary when he read the book. 他讀這本書時經常查字典。

　　I looked the word up in the dictionary to refresh my memory of its exact meaning. 我查了詞典，以便弄清這個詞的準確意思。

　　I often look up the words I don’t know in the dictionary or on the Internet. 我經常在字典里或網上查找我不認識的單詞。

　　“Is that the correct spelling?” “I don’t know—look it up in a dictionary.” “那是正確的拼寫嗎?”“我不知道——查查詞典吧。”

　　I didn’t know what “loquacious” meant and had to look it up in a dictionary. 我不知道loquacious這個是什么意思，所以只好查了詞典。

　　根據英語的搭配習慣，有些名詞通常要可接for doing sth作定語，而不接to do sth。這類名詞比較常用的有：

　　1. apology 道歉

　　用于apology for doing sth，意為“為做某事而道歉”。如：

　　I make no apology for repeating the question. 我多問一遍又沒有錯。

　　I must offer her an apology for not going to her party. 我必須為未參加她的晚會表示歉意。

　　I must offer my apology for not coming to your party. 我沒來參加你的晚會，必須向你道歉。

　　2. aptitude 才能，天資

　　用于aptitude for doing sth，意為“做某事的才能(資質、天資)”。如：

　　英語中表示“叔叔”的單詞是uncle，表示“阿姨”的詞語是aunt。這兩個單詞看似簡單，但在使用方面有很多需要注意的地方。

　　一、關于詞義

　　英語中aunt 的意思很多，除表示“阿姨”外，還可表示“姑媽”“伯母”“舅媽”等，總之，一個人的父親或母親的姐妹，他都叫她aunt。同樣的道理，英語中uncle的意思也很多，除表示“叔叔”外，還可表示“叔父”“伯父”“舅父”“姑父”“姨父”等，總之，一個人的父親或母親的兄弟，他都叫他aunt。

　　aunt和uncle均可用于稱呼，不僅可以單獨使用，也可與教名連用。如：

　　英語中既可說 aunt and uncle，也可說成 uncle and aunt。如：

　　比較：John Bull 意為“約翰牛”，是英國或英國人的綽號。
