Studying at home was tough at first. So many distractions – food, games… parents. Even the dog got in the way. I wanted to learn, but my concentration levels were low. And our class survey showed my friends were struggling too. We’re used to being at school, helping each other. Adapting to being away was more difficult than I expected. I asked my mum and dad for some advice. "Picture home as school during study-time, and agree some rewards with your friends," they said. "Please don't interrupt me when I'm working then," I said, "and stop the dog barking." "Deal," they said. So my classmates and I devised a plan. We’d study until we'd all completed our tasks, and play games together online only when everyone had finished their work. And soon, though the interruptions continued, we were much more productive.

At the beginning I didn't realize self-discipline could be such a serious problem for 3rd-grade students giving that the Gaokao was already upon us, until I saw the survey result. How come so many classmates cannot focus during online courses?
I brought this question to my parents at dinner. To my surprise, they both seemed to find it quite understandable and encouraged me to solve the problem through communication and brainstorming. In the next few days, I organized a series of conference calls with the entire class and asked everyone to talk about the difficulties they encountered with taking classes online and come up with solutions together.
Three months later, the new survey results ended up shockingly good. Our teacher praised my efforts, but really, as the class leader, it pleased me the most to see everyone get better grades.

Every student at Hongxing Middle School has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in some way. Our lives have been upended, daily routines altered, and future plans clouded by uncertainty.
A recent survey showing the level of self-discipline among my classmates has come to my attention. And I must say, I'm quite disappointed in the results. Studying from home has drained the motivation and perseverance from many of you. I’m certain most of you don't even get off the couch to change your shirt or brush your teeth.
How can we fix this? Are we destined to be the worst-performing class of Hongxing Middle School graduates? Are we destined to score so poorly on the gaokao that our parents will be too embarrassed to claim us in public? I discussed this lack of gumption with my parents and came up with a solution to our woes.
In a Zoom call with my classmates, I revealed the solution: We should all lie on the next survey. Yes, you heard me correctly. After speaking to many of you, I realized I cannot motivate you beyond your capacity. You're a slothful group of students, to say the least. However, in order to appease our parents and teachers, we should all fabricate our answers. Whether or not you truly become motivated is not my concern.
