一、while作名詞用，表示“一會兒”“一段時間”
1.She likes to lie down for a while after lunch.
她喜歡午飯后躺一會兒。
2.Coming to another country to study requires a big adjustment and it takes a while to fit in.
來到另一個國家求學，需要花一段時間來適應。
二、While作連詞(1)引導時間狀語
1.We must strike while the iron is hot.趁熱打鐵。
2.While she was listening to the radio，she fell asleep.
她聽著收音機睡著了。
(2)引起讓步狀語從句，意思是“雖然…但是….”、“盡管…但是…”(多放于句首)1.While he loves his students，he is very strict with them..
雖然他愛他的學生，可是他對他們很嚴格。

(3)引起條件狀語，意思是“只要”
1.While there is life there is hope.只要生命存在，就有希望。
2.While there is a way there is away.有志者事竟成。
三、While作并列連詞用，意思為“而，然而”，表對比。而but表轉折。注意用心比較體會while與but的句中用意
1.Some people waste food while others haven't enough.
有些人很費糧食，然而有些人卻吃不飽。
2.The son was having a good meal at home，while the parents were working in the fields.
兒子在家吃好飯而父母卻在田里辛勤勞作。
3.I ought to have helped her，but I never could.
我本該幫她但沒能。

四.while，when，as的用法區別
都譯為“當…的時候”，區別為：when后的從句謂語動詞既可是延續性動詞，也可是短暫性動詞，而且還可作并列連詞，譯為“這時”。但以下句型一定用when，作并列連詞：
句型A：be about to do…when…正要做…這時(發生另一事)
句型B：was/were doing…when…正在…這時(發生另一事)
句型C：had done…when…剛要做…這時(發生另一事)
1.We were about to set out when it began to rain.
我們剛要出發天突然下雨了。
2.He had hardly sat down when his mobile rang.
他剛一坐下手機就響了。
3.I was walking along the bank of the river when I fell into it.
我正沿河岸散步突然掉進水里。
while后的從句謂語動詞只能是延續性動詞，強調主從句的兩個動詞同時發生；while也可作并列連詞，表示兩個動作的對比，譯為“而”“然而”。as則表示兩個變化中的動作的同時性，譯為“一邊…一邊…”。

(在一個延續動作過程中發生另一個動作)
2.He hurried home，looking behind as he went.
