　　1968年年末，披頭士放棄了現場表演兩年多后，保羅·麥卡特尼渴望樂隊重返舞臺表演。當年的《White Album》錄音環節已經看到隊員間一些嚴重的爭論，和續漸催向緊張的關系。麥卡特尼認為樂隊因為多年沒有作現場演奏，已失去凝聚力。這時麥卡特尼想起來母親曾說過的一句話：“讓一切都隨其自然”，于是麥卡特尼開始構思這首歌曲。麥卡特尼母親的名字叫瑪麗，所以他用圣經中耶穌的母親瑪利亞來代指自己的母親，于是誕生了“Mother Mary comes to me”這句歌詞[6-7] 。
