When did you last go outside for sports? Some students might need a while to recall. But forstudents in Yangzhou University it is easy to remember as they need to run in the morning atleast 45 times every year – at least three times a week during their two semesters. Theuniversity even uses fingerprint punch-in clocks to manage students’ records.

Now colleges are seeing a change in the student lifestyle from outdoor enthusiasts to indoorcouch potatoes and Internet addicts.

“Students do not like doing exercise and they consider it boring. This method can force themto exercise and keep themselves in good shape,” said Yang Jian from the Faculty of Arts atYangzhou University. “New technologies, such as the Internet, offer students many alternativesin their spare time.”

However, even with on the spot fingerprint scanning, some students still try to skip morningjogging sessions. To them, sports are just not important enough.

In the past two years Zhang Yi, 20, a junior majoring in law at Yangzhou University, has neverbeen outside for sports except during physical education class.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with sleeping late in the morning and wanting to stay inthe dormitory in my spare time. I have more fun doing things on my computer than playingon the sports ground in wet clothes,” said Zhang.

In Zhang’s opinion, sports and even socializing are no better than staying in the dormitory andplaying on a computer.

“Every time I come back from student activities I feel completely exhausted from forcedsocializing,” said Zhang.

The Internet and various on-campus services, from food delivery to laundry, are fuelling astudent culture of staying in dormitories. A student can have every need met without leavingthe dormitory.

“I feel more comfortable in the dorm. I can sit back in cozy pajamas and watch a movie withoutcaring about my sitting position or anything,” said Cheng Jie, 21, a senior majoring in civilengineering at the Southeast University in Nanjing.

Cheng said that with social networking sites, online games and micro-blogging adding toalready tight schedules, sports are often the last thing to be considered.

“I can think of tons of things to do in my spare time besides outdoor exercise,” said Cheng.

But Jin Yinghua, a professor at Beijing Sports University, said that sports are not only forkeeping fit, but also an irreplaceable “education” for students.

“Sports are not only a way for students to train their body, but also an important way to learnresponsibility, teamwork and dedication,” said Jin.

“In sports, people try to win. But losing is just as good because you must learn to cope withdefeat, which is another important lesson for young people nowadays.”

RED HOOK, N.Y. — It was harvest time, and several farm hands were hunched over a bed ofsweet potatoes under the midday sun, elbow deep in soil for an hour. But they were nottypical laborers.

Jeff Arnold, 28, who has learned how to expertly maneuver a tractor, graduated from ColoradoState University. Abe Bobman, 24, who studied sociology at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, was clearing vines alongside Nate Krauss-Malett, 25, who went to Skidmore College.

Mr. Krauss-Malett said he became interested in farming after working in a restaurant and seeinghow much food was wasted. Mr. Bobman had the same realization working in the producesection at a grocery store before college.

They had been in the fields here at Hearty Roots Community Farm in the Hudson Valley since 7 a.m. They all said they could not imagine doing any other job.

“Farming appeals to me, and probably to other people, because it’s simple andstraightforward work outdoors with literal fruits from your labor,” Mr. Bobman said. “Itdoesn’t feel like you’re a part of an oppressive institution.”

For decades, the number of farmers has been shrinking as a share of the population, andagriculture has often been seen as a backbreaking profession with little prestige. But the lastAgricultural Census in 2007 showed a 4 percent increase in the number of farms, the firstincrease since 1920, and some college graduates are joining in the return to the land.

Jordan Schmidt, a crew manager here at Hearty Roots, studied environmental science atWesleyan. Ms. Schmidt, 27, did not have so much as a garden growing up, but in college, shesaid, she worked at a student-run farm and fell in love with agriculture. So she gave up onresearch science and moved onto a farm in Pennsylvania after graduating. This is her thirdseason at Hearty Roots.

Hearty Roots, about 100 miles north of New York City, spans 70 acres with a clear view of theCatskill Mountains to the west. At the height of the harvest this year, the farm produced 8,000 pounds of vegetables a week — including peppers, beets and kale — and employed 10 workers. None of them came from farming backgrounds and most had heard about the job through wordof mouth.

Ms. Schmidt recalled that her first time working on a farm, she loaded thousands of onions intoa greenhouse to dry out, which was supposed to improve their flavor. But the roof was leftuncovered, and when she returned the next day, many of the onions had been spoiled by thesun.
