          雅思大作文范文:報紙影響人們的思想

The nickname of the "Uncrowned King" given tothe modern journalist is by no means anexaggeration. In almost every modern society, newspapers have been playing an essential role inshaping people’s thoughts on a wide range of issues and are always regarded as anindispensable source of information. In my opinion, this complex phenomenon can be boileddown to several key factors, and both its positive and negative aspects need to be analyzedthoroughly.

To begin with, human curiosity is an underlying factor in the growing popularity ofnewspapers. As the only species on the planet equipped with extraordinary intelligence, humans are inveterately curious about the latest events around the globe. Therefore, all kindsof newspapers prosper in such an age that is gushing with information, appealing to people'sincreasingly strong desire to know more about this constantly changing world. It is littlewonder that numerous readers are lured into heavier reliance on those well-established andinternationally renowned newspapers.

To a large extent, this situation is a desirable one with its many positive aspects. First ofall, in order to maintain their good reputation, most newspapers and magazines report actualevents in a detailed way, providing not only factual information but also deep insights intocomplex social and political issues. In addition, circulated on a daily basis and across anextensive demographic region, major newspapers have smoothly operated branches, seasoned correspondents and a highly efficient system to collect local news with the swiftestactions. Most importantly, their coverage and insightful comments can encourage youngreaders to form their own opinions on current affairs.

On the other hand, people should be fully aware of the downside of the journalisticdominance. More often than not, newspapers of national importance are largely controlled bythe government and act as the organ of the authorities. By furnishing citizens with prejudicedand self-opinionated reports on sensitive issues, such as foreign affairs and national security, these newspapers can manipulate their perspectives and attitudes and exercise a sort ofmonopoly on their way of thinking. On a less serious level, flooding the pages with trivialpieces of entertainment news and celebrity secrets is the usual way to divert the public’sattention away from government scandals and to eclipse such social and economic ills asunemployment, crime and judicial incompetence.

In conclusion, although the positive functions of modern journalism are to be sufficientlyrecognized, people must not slacken their vigilance against the possible abuse of such atremendous power that newspapers possess. In other words, while absorbing bits ofinformation in the newspapers, readers are advised to adopt an objective approach and casta discriminating eye on their way of presentation, comments and implicit assumptions.

          雅思大作文題目:

Should widespread advertising be strictlylimited in modern society?

Some people claim that widespreadadvertising in the modern society has a harmfuleffect on young people. Therefore, advertisements should be strictly limited on TV,radio, the internet and in public places.

To what extent do you agree or disagreewith this statement?

          雅思大作文范文:

Although advertising has existed for thousandsof years and is certainly not a recent invention, it is only in our modern society that the greatinfluence and importance of widespread advertising is full play. However, in my opinion, manyadvertisements are harmful to young people's mental development and, therefore, should bebanned in the mass media.

To begin with, various factors have given rise to the thriving of advertising industry, themost significant one being the proliferation of new products, services and technologies. In orderto give their new inventions the utmost publicity, many businesses choose to promote themby broadcasting attractive advertisements through mass media, such as television, radio andinternet. In addition, the increasingly fierce competition in the commercial world hascompelled a lot of companies to resort to exaggerated and even deceitful advertisements togain an edge over their business rivals.

As many social critics have pointed out, the current trend in advertising exerts acorrupting influence on young people's minds because there are always a lot of unwholesomeand indecent contents in modern advertisements. For example, products such as wines, lingerieand cosmetics tend to use the female body and amorous scenes as the main attraction of theiradvertisements. What is even worse, a subculture of sexual suggestiveness andpermissiveness seems to permeate the entire advertising industry. Young people, especiallythose adolescents, are often lured away from their studies and indulge themselves in eroticfantasies

Therefore, the authorities should take serious steps to counteract the negative effects ofimmoral advertising. One effective approach is to establish and impose a strict censorshipon all mass media, expunging any sexual explicit and implicit pictures and words from theadvertisements they tend to show. Also, rules and regulations should be laid down to banadvertisements from certain public places, discouraging its rampant omnipresence andcreating a cleaner and healthier social environment. Furthermore, all local governments canincrease the costs of all kinds of advertisements to be shown or published through massmedia, thus reducing their currently enormous quantities.

In summary, the prevalence of advertising in our modern society and its inimical effects onthe youth of today must be curbed, otherwise public morality and traditional cultures andvalues and even the future of the world will be caught in a precarious situation.
