本書共六章，**章簡明扼要地闡述了關于寫作的幾個基本觀點，為后續章節中的理論解釋作了鋪墊。第二章介紹被英語修辭學認為是寫作的**個重要環節的“覓材取材”，并闡釋了幾種重要方法。第三章講述寫作中的選詞及修辭策略，主要介紹了詞義的類別和語體特點，并提出了詞匯處理的種種策略，如靜態變動態、辭格使用等。第四章講解句子的建構及其修辭策略，重點是語句的通順連貫、言簡意賅、生動活潑等修辭問題，而非句法的正確與否。第五章講述段落寫作。本章展示了段落的基本結構及其發展的幾種重要模式，并提出了作為論題的段落的建構策略。第六章闡述文章寫作，先介紹文章的傳統發展模式，然后講解作為論題的文章的寫作要領以及文章開頭、結尾的修辭策略。本書的*后兩章對中國學生英語寫作中的常見問題進行了分析，并提出了相應的解決辦法。為了便于教學，本書各章都附有針對性的練習。
