保護環境英語作文：Development and the Environment
It is undeniable that the worsening environment has become the biggest concern of the present-day world. Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion. Waste gases poison the air we breathe. The rivers and lakes are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories. It is probably no exaggeration to say that deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of mankind itself.
Some people are of the opinion that the environmental problem is the price we have to pay for economic development. But I do not think that this argument is valid. After all, what is the point of economic growth if people's lives are adversely alfected by worsening environmental pollution ?
不可否認環境惡化已成為當今世界最大的問題。土地資源在不斷減少,因為水土流失。廢氣污染著我們呼吸的空氣。河流和湖泊被工廠的 倒出來的廢棄物所污染。這可以毫不夸張地說,環境質量的惡化威脅著人類的生存。
有些人認為環境問題是我們因為經濟發展而必須要付出的代價。但我不認為這種觀點是有效的。畢竟,經濟增長的重點是什么?如果人們的生活環境被日益惡化、被嚴重污染了，那還有什么意義?

One fine afternoon I was walking along Fifth Avenue，when I remembered that it was necessary to buy a pair of socks. I turned into the first sock shop that caught my eye，and a boy clerk who could not have been more than seventeen years old came forward. “What can I do for you，sir?”“I wish to buy a pair of socks.” His eyes glowed. There was a note of passion in his voice. “Did you know that you had come into the finest place in the world to buy socks?”I had not been aware of that，as my entrance had been accidental. “Come with me，” said the boy，ecstatically. I followed him to the rear of the shop，and he began to haul down from the shelves box after box，displaying their contents for my delectation.
