          A growing number of young parents today complain that it is difficult to regulate their children’s behavior or even simply to teach them politeness. There are mainly three approaches that parents would like to adopt to teach children how to behave well. In my mind, keeping children from exposing to harmful TV programs and movies is better than talking to them and supervising them.

          On the one hand, it is highly necessary to prevent children aging from five to ten from imitating behavior on the screen that is not appropriate for them. At a young age, children lack the necessary judgement to analyze whether the behavior displayed in TV programs or movies is right or wrong. On the contrary, children driven by curiosity are willing to mimic the behavior that they believe is cool. As a result, while having disagreement with others, children influenced by TV programs and movies may demonstrate aggression or even resort to violence, such as quarrels and fights. Even worse, owing to the young age, they cannot anticipate the potential consequence that their behavior will bring. For example, boys are especially inclined to adopt the vulgar language in movies, like four-letter words, which they believe help them show their masculine and disdain. Therefore, parents need to be scrupulous and avoid children’s exposure to those TV programs and movies.

          On the other hand, parents can be selective and choose TV programs and movies that are beneficial for children’s growth. Actually, there are numerous well-designed TV programs and movies for children aging from five to ten. In those programs, directors and producers not only convey knowledge, but also try to teach children how to love, respect and communicate with people around them. Spending more time on those programs, children are going to gradually form desirable habits and acquire favorable characteristics that will benefit all their life. A typical example of those programs is Haier Brothers in China, a series of animation about two brothers’ adventure in the world. From their stories, children learn to be brave in front of troubles, be tolerant to others’ mistakes, and be friendly to people around them.

          On the contrary, both talking and monitoring seems ineffective in correcting children’s behavior. Children at this age start to show rebellion and they may regard behaving bad as a method to arouse parents’ attention, to express their dissatisfaction, or even to provoke parents on purpose. At this time, talking may take effect for a couple of days or even does not work at all. Moreover, parents can hardly spend that much time to supervise their children when they play with friends. Parents need to work, do housework, and have their own social life. Also, with parents’ supervision, children may feel uneasy, or choose to merely behave well in front of parents.

          In summary, to help children behave well, parents ought to restrain what children watch on the screen. This is a better option compared to taking to children and supervising them.
