一、作“是……還是……”解時，whether表示一種選擇，其后可以跟介詞短語或不定式短語。
1. 后跟介詞短語。例如：
(1)She made the mistake whether by accident or by design.
不知她是偶然還是故意去犯這個錯誤的。
(2)Whether through choice or obedience I don”t know, but he certainly did all the work very well.
是出于內心自愿還是奉命行事，這我不曉得，不過他的確是把所有的工作都做好了。
2. 后跟動詞不定式短語。例如：
(1)I don’t know whether to accept the offer or refuse it. (= It is doubtful whether to accept the offer or refuse it. )對這個提議，我不知道是接受好，還是拒絕好。
(2)It is to be decided whether to go or stay here.
是走還是呆在這兒還有待決策。(it作形式主語。)
(3)Will you advise me whether to accept his suggestion (or not)?
向你請教，我是否要接受他的建議?
二、作“是否，會不會”解時，whether可用來引導名詞性從句，即主語從句、賓語從句、表語從句和同位語從句。
1. 引導主語從句。引導主語從句時，可用it作形式主語。例如：
(1)Whether they consider this opinion or not is not clear. (= It is not clear whether they consider this opinion or not. )
他們是否考慮這個意見還不清楚。
(2)Whether we shall be able to come is doubtful. (= It is doubtful whether we shall be able to come. )我們是否能夠來，尚不確定。
2. 引導賓語從句。這時whether可與if換用。例如：
(1)A simple experiment will show whether air has weight or not. (= A simple experiment will show if air has weight. )一個簡單的實驗就可以證明空氣是否有重量。
(2)I wonder whether we shall be in time for the last bus or (whether we shall)have to walk home.
我不知道我們是否可以趕上最后一班公共汽車，或是只好步行回家。
3. 引導表語從句
The question is whether we have to make a decision at once or not.
問題是我們是否必須馬上作出決定。
4. 引導同位語從句。它的前面通常有fact, conclusion, news, problem, question, idea, doubt等名詞作同位語結構的中心詞。例如：
(1)She has answered the question whether or not this supermarket is the largest one in the region.
她回答了這樣一個問題，即該超市在這個地區是不是最大的。
(2)The question whether we ought to call in a specialist was answered by the family doctor.
關于我們是否該請一位專家過來的問題，家庭醫生已經作了回答。
三、作“不論……還是……”解時，whether引導讓步狀語從句。例如：
(1)Whether you can see the moon or not, it is always round.
不論你能否看得見，月亮總是圓的。
(2)You may rely upon my help, whether others help you or not.
不論別人幫不幫你，你都可以依賴我的幫助。
四、whether or no除了能夠像whether or not一樣引導名詞性從句外，還能單獨放在句首或句末，作“無論如何”解。這時，它僅起狀語作用。例如：
(1)We should complete the general design of the motorcar this year, whether or no.
無論如何，今年我們應該完成這種汽車的總體設計。
(2)You should support your parents, whether or no.
無論如何，你都應該瞻養自己的父母。
